Thrifty Thursday

Good Morning Friends!

Today I am super excited to start a new weekly post called "Thrifty Thursday"!
For anyone who knows me personally, they know that I love to thrift.
If anyone asks "Where'd you get that??" My answer will more than likely be:
"From Goodwill" or "From Salvation Army"
I just cant seem to bring myself to buying anything from a department store when there are equally cute things for a third of the price at a thrift shop.

My mama is my thrifting buddy. We have the same style and the same eye for the cutest things. It does require a search, but it is so rewarding! And did I mention its good for anyone on a budget? Seriously.

All this to say, I will be writing a blog post every Thursday to show the latest finds.

Today I will start with Matthews apartment remodel.
And since we just got engaged two days ago, this is even more fun to write about and remodel since I'm going to be living there in less than a year! We had a very small budget, and he needed everything. Have you ever walked into an apartment where there is a just a guy living by himself? no? Well, let me tell you what you'll probably find.
-a couch
-a chair
-a table
-a bed
-a dresser

Will there be something hanging on the wall?-probably not
Will there be any color?  Brown and black...

Let me tell you, Matthews TV was on a plastic computer desk turned backwards.
It needed some love.

So I set my thriftiness to work.
And you know what I found? I really love to decorate. I really love to make a house a home. I wish I did more before pictures, but alas, I didn't have a blog then and had no idea that I would want to share it.

First we started looking for a TV stand. I found one at Salvation Army for a total $150. This one was perfect because it was triangular in the back and could fit in the corner by the mantel. Since he is in an apartment where there isn't much space, this was a steal, even though I was looking for something more around $100. It was super ugly...like had metal grapes for the knobs, but we switched them out for some glass knobs. We also took off the top and bottom doors for open shelving. Now we LOVE it!

We found this desk at Goodwill for $30! It was right in our price range and fit perfectly in the limited space we had for a desk. We decided to keep this one brown :)
There was also this super ugly fold out chair for $6. But with a touch of spray paint and some cute fabric it looked better than new! Love it and actually can't wait to study in this little space now :)

Next we wanted a coffee area. This space isn't finished quite yet (I still want to add a few prints on the wall and add some hooks to hang coffee cups)
We found this little beauty at Goodwill for a whopping $25! Totally in price range. This table started out as a brown, like the desk I showed above. Matthew painted this one by himself while I was at work. He's such a sweetheart :)

The last couple of things that we found were not technically thrift finds, but they were very good deals, so I added them. They were both at Home Goods and captured my heart. The first was a hexagonal side table. It was half off- $25! It was literally just what I had envisioned in my mind for a side table! The next thing was a wood stool. This is quite possibly my favorite thing that we had bought so far, and coincidentally, it wasn't on sale. It was $50 but in my eyes completely worth it. It is very sturdy and can be used as an extra seat in the living room, a stepping stool for getting something out of the top of the cabinets, or a place to set some books or a large vase. I love it.

After we found all of this great furniture, we wanted to paint all of it (minus the desk and stool) to lighten up the apartment. So we set off to Lowe's to find the perfect colors. We ended up getting "Niagara Blue" and "Cream". We painted the TV chest and side table blue and the coffee table, and coffee stand cream.

Matthew's mom taught us how to make chalk paint, without having to buy all the expensive stuff. So we made it up and got right to work.

After it was painted, we distressed the furniture. Love it so much!
I'm jealous that he gets to live here and I don't! But in less than a year, I'll be here too and we'll be starting our life as a married couple. eeek! I'm excited :)
Once the living room is finished, I'll do a post about it.
Those are the latest thrifty finds!
Have a lovely Thursday sweet friends!
xoxo,
Lacey Beth

  4. Very nice, Lacey! Making a house a home is a real gift. Not everyone can do it, but you certainly have what it takes! How did you make your chalk paint?

    1. Thanks so much! You use 2 cups of paint, 2 tablespoons of plaster of paris, and enough water to make it smooth (only takes a little bit). Mix it all together and paint it on! :)
